la luna

a photographer’s studio inspired by photographer hiroshi sugimoto’s “theatres” series, located in ballard, washington

the forces of moonlight are strongly represented in this design. the softness, subtlety, and strength of the moonlight is similar to that of the light quality emitted from from the screen that illuminates the rest of the theatre.

featured in the university of washington’s college of built environment’s end-of-year show 2019.

“theatres” by hiroshi sugimoto.

inspired by the strength and subtlety of the light emitting from the screen. it pulls you in while pushing back out, the light carving the space that eventually shapes the theatre through the highlighting of certain architectural details.

created in tandem with site conditions. light fills the lot from the top and gets pulled across the length of the site, concentrating in the back before subtly pushing back out, softly carving out the rest of the space.

the photographer works in the space located at the top right of this section. his works are then displayed in the rest of the spaces, similar to the way the light concentrates in that part of the site before flowing back out into the rest of the lot, shaping the space.
